Indexed by what you notice, such as no sound, not by the subsystem behind it.

10 of the 29 problems below are not faults. The modeler does that on purpose, and they are marked by design.

one of my presets makes no sound

Fractal give a procedure for this, not a single cause. Work down it in order. The first two catch most cases.

  1. A cable, before anything else . Fix: Most of the time it is a faulty or disconnected cable. Plug headphones straight into the modeler. If the preset sounds fine there, the fault is downstream and nothing on it needs changing.

  2. The path does not reach the output . Fix: A grid can look connected and not be. Check the preset begins with an Input block and ends with an Output block, and that those match the jacks you have cabled. Then change each block to a shunt in turn, leaving the Amp and Cab until last, and listen for where the sound returns.

  3. A modifier is holding a level at zero . Fix: If something is assigned to a volume or level control and the pedal or switch it expects is not plugged in, the level sits wherever that missing controller says, usually at silence. Either remove the modifier, or set the external controller's initial value to 100% instead of 0%.

  4. The preset wants a User Cab you do not have . Fix: Presets you downloaded often reference a cab IR that lives on the author's modeler and not yours. Point the Cab block at a factory cab and the sound comes back.

faultrig setup

everything suddenly sounds harsh and bright

  1. The global power amp or cab simulation got switched off . Fix: Check the CONFIG page of the Global menu. These are global switches, so the change hits every preset at once.

  2. One preset only—SAG is fully down . Fix: If it is a single preset, not all of them, check that the Amp block's SAG has not been turned fully counter-clockwise. Then check the Global Graphic EQ.

fault

I restored a preset and it sounds nothing like it did

  1. Something around the preset changed, not the preset . Fix: A preset is a list of settings, and those settings are interpreted by whatever firmware is running. The usual culprits are a firmware version change, a different guitar, a different amp at the other end, or external controllers sitting at different values than they were. Global Blocks that have since been edited will also change every preset that references them.

a preset from another Fractal modeler won't load, or sounds wrong

  1. by design

Presets do not move freely across the line . Fix: Axe-Fx II presets do not load on an Axe-Fx III, an FM9 or an FM3, and theirs do not load here. The models largely carry over, so transferring settings by hand generally lands where you expect. The Axe-Fx II's factory cabs live in the Legacy bank on the newer modelers.

installing from gridleak

Chrome blocked MIDI access

MIDI permission denied. Install talks to the modeler over Web MIDI, and Chrome only lets a site use MIDI once you allow it.

  1. MIDI access was refused for gridleak.app, or the prompt was dismissed . Fix: In Chrome open Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → MIDI devices, and allow gridleak.app. Reload the page, then connect again.
