snapshots and modes

Preset, snapshot or stomp: which layer a change belongs on, and which one leaves a gap in your sound.

Helix 3.80
The idea

Three layers, and the gap only exists on one of them

A snapshot is a saved position of the controls inside one preset: which blocks are on, and where their parameters sit. Nothing loads or unloads when you change snapshot, so it happens instantly and delay and reverb tails carry through. A preset change reloads everything and cuts them.

There are eight snapshots in every preset on this device.

Preset

Small gap

A whole rig: every block, every setting and the routing.

Use for A different song, or a different setup.

Snapshot

No gap

A saved position of the controls within the loaded preset. Nothing reloads.

Use for Song sections: verse, chorus, solo. Anything inside one song.

Stomp

No gap

One footswitch turning one block on or off, like a pedal.

Use for Anything you kick in when you feel like it, not on a plan.

the rule

One preset per song, one snapshot per section

If a change happens inside a song, make it a snapshot. If it happens between songs, it can be a preset. Presets used where snapshots belong cause the gap you hear when sounds change.

The exception is a sound you reach for on impulse, like a boost, a tuner or a bit of chaos. That is what stomp mode is for, and it works alongside snapshots.
