the app is half the pedal
the one thing
The pedal plays and the Cortex Cloud app edits. Anything past one macro per effect needs your phone. There is no desktop version.
what needs the phone
Neural DSP describe the Nano Cortex as fully standalone, with the app mainly for capture downloads and firmware updates. That holds for playing: you can do a whole gig without opening it.
Everything past that needs the app. That means choosing which overdrive sits in Pre-FX 1, editing past the single AMOUNT macro, and picking an IR microphone and position. It also means renaming a preset, taking a backup and changing any setting. Premier Guitar’s reviewer found using it without the app almost unimaginable.
Treat the app as half the instrument. Keep a spare phone or a cheap tablet in the gig bag.
There is no desktop editor. Cortex Control is Quad Cortex only, and Neural DSP’s FAQ answers “desktop controller” with “none available”. An unofficial community-built desktop app exists but isn’t supported.

You need a free Neural DSP account and a registered Nano Cortex. There’s no subscription—cloud access, community captures and uploads are all free.
- Install Cortex Cloud from the App Store or Google Play. Phones and tablets both work.
- Update the app before you update the pedal’s firmware. If you update the firmware first, the new features don’t show in the app.
- In the app, go to Devices and choose Add New.
- On the pedal, hold EXIT and CAPTURE together for one second. The GAIN ring sweeps clockwise and the Footswitch I LED blinks slowly—that’s pairing mode.
- On Android, grant the app Location permission. Bluetooth Low Energy scanning requires it. Without it the pedal won’t appear.
finding good captures
Cortex Cloud holds tens of thousands of captures, and quality varies. Reviewers named the problems: inconsistent naming, minimal descriptions, no useful quality tags, and some uploads that are a fuzzy mess. Filter before you download.
Work in this order:
- Exhaust the 25 factory captures first. They’re curated and consistent, and they teach you what “good” sounds like on this device.
- Then browse Neural DSP’s own Cortex Cloud profile. Over 1,393 Quad Cortex factory captures were made available to Nano owners in November 2025, plus 669 Neural Capture V2 captures across 41 device types. That is a large first-party library before any community upload.
- Sort by popularity and filter by instrument and gain range. Cortex Cloud’s search was rebuilt in March 2026. It is faster and ranks title and tag matches higher.
- Read the description for whether a cabinet is included. This decides whether you run the IR Loader on or off. Uploaders don’t always say.
- Audition before you commit a slot. NanOS 2.2.0 added one-tap capture auditioning in the app.
To judge a downloaded capture: if it sounds bad with the IR Loader off, it probably has no cabinet in it. If it sounds bad with the IR Loader on, it probably already includes one. Flip the IR and listen again before you write it off.

Here is the shape of the workflow. The reference has the full walkthrough: every button press, what you should see after each one, and the fix for each thing that goes wrong.
Read it once even if you have installed captures before. A capture is an ingredient, not a saved sound, and skipping the setup after install makes it sound broken.
installing and living with them
Captures transfer over Bluetooth from the app. You need internet at download time but not afterwards—once a capture is on the pedal it plays with no phone and no signal.
Save into one of the five capture banks, or into the User Library. The User Library is the position where all five capture indicators light at once. Use it to keep a capture without taking a bank slot you use.
Next, level-match the capture. Each uploader gain-stages differently, so a new capture rarely sits at the same volume as your others. Hold CAPTURE for two seconds and set per-preset capture volume against a factory preset.
Don’t lock your phone or background the app mid-transfer. Bluetooth is the weakest link here. A disconnect mid-operation usually needs a power cycle.

Renaming, reordering, duplicating and deleting presets are all app-only. Reordering by dragging arrived in NanOS 2.2.0.
MIDI Program Change numbers belong to the slot, not to the preset in it. Reordering presets does not move their PC assignments. If you’re using a MIDI controller, plan your mapping around slots.
where IR uploads and firmware updates happen
Custom IR uploads happen in a browser on the Cortex Cloud website, never on the pedal or in the app. There’s room for 256 of your own IRs.
Firmware updates go over Bluetooth through the app, not over USB. Don’t lock the phone, disable Bluetooth or background the app while one runs.
Take a cloud backup before a gig and before any firmware update. NanOS 2.2.0 added up to five. Downloading a backup overwrites everything on the device: it is a restore, not a merge.

Offline mode for device settings arrived in NanOS 2.2.0. Before that, with no signal at the venue, you couldn’t change settings at soundcheck.
Sync everything you need while you have a connection and take a backup. If you gig regularly, add a MIDI controller so the phone never comes out.
