modes, scenes and setlists

a preset is a rig and a scene is a snapshot of that rig. The mode sets which of the two your feet switch between. If your sound changed when you pressed a switch, check the mode.

  1. 1. same eight switches, four different answers

The hardware is the same in every row. If standing on B does something you didn't expect, check the mode first.

  2. 2. SCENE is the one that doesn't gap

Scenes recall settings inside a rig that's already loaded, so switching is instant. PRESET reloads the whole rig. Build one song as scenes A–H in a single preset and the dropouts between verse and chorus go away.

  3. 3. STOMP is the pedalboard mode

Each switch toggles one block on and off, like stepping on a pedal. Coming from a real pedalboard, start here: it is the most familiar way to use the Quad Cortex.

  4. 4. HYBRID splits the row

Some switches change rigs and the rest work as stomps. Combined with PRESET it halves your bank size: two presets per bank instead of four.

what A–H do, and when

PRESET

Each of A–H loads a different preset.

Best forSets where each song needs a different rig: different amp, different cab.

Trade-offPreset changes reload the whole signal chain. This is where switching gaps come from.

SCENE

Each of A–H recalls Scene A–H within the loaded preset.

Best forPlaying one song: clean verse, crunch chorus, lead. Same rig, different settings, no gap.

Trade-offYou stay inside one preset, with eight scenes until you change preset.

STOMP

Each of A–H toggles an individual block on and off.

Best forWorking like a pedalboard—the mode to use if you came from an actual board and want that feel back.

HYBRID

Splits the eight switches between two jobs—some presets or scenes, some stomps.

Best forReal gigs, where you need a couple of rig changes and a couple of stompboxes on the same page.

Trade-offHybrid combined with PRESET halves your bank size—two presets per bank instead of four.

scenes

scenes inside a song, presets between songs

Scenes recall parameter values inside a rig that is already loaded, so there is nothing to wait for. Presets swap the whole rig. Three presets for the verse, chorus and solo of one song cause audible switching gaps. Build them as three scenes in one preset instead.

scenes switch without a gap, presets do not

Scenes recall parameter values inside a rig that is already loaded, so there is nothing to load. For audible dropouts between parts of the same song, build those parts as scenes in one preset.

every new preset starts on Scene A

Whatever scene you were on when you saved, the preset opens on A. Build your default sound as Scene A.

input level is not part of a scene

Scenes cannot change the input level—it is a global device setting. Anything you want to vary per scene has to be a block inside the preset.

Gig View

the screen you can read standing up

A stripped-back display showing preset and scene names large enough to read while standing up.

  • Swipe up from the bottom of the screen, or
  • Hold BANK DOWN + TEMPO together—this has to be enabled in Device Settings first.

Footswitch access to Gig View arrived in CorOS 4.0.0. On older firmware the swipe is the only way in.

  1. 1. preset name, big enough to read standing up

A 7-inch screen full of Grid detail is fine on a desk and hard to read three feet below your face in a dark room. This is the same information at stage distance.

  2. 2. current scene, and what's next

Which of the eight scenes you're on, so you know what the next footswitch does before you commit your foot to it.

  3. 3. two ways in: set the second one up at home

Swipe up from the bottom of the screen, or hold BANK DOWN + TEMPO. The footswitch route arrived in CorOS 4.0.0 and has to be enabled in Device Settings first. Do that before the gig, not at it.
