The Ruby is a popular DIY battery-powered mini amp and a common first build for amp and pedal hobbyists. A J201 JFET source-follower buffers the guitar input and feeds a volume control, then an LM386 power-amp chip with a gain control between its gain pins. A Zobel network keeps the chip stable, and a 220 µF capacitor couples it to any 4- to 32-ohm speaker. It runs from 9 V and puts out well under a watt.
